I am a grassroots lad. I hate when artists go mainstream and everyone knows their songs. I love the elitism of knowing about an artist that people don’t know about. At least that’s how I was at one point in my life. Now I’m here trying to support talented people who are working hard toward their own crafted goal. And so we meet KOTA, a local legend in Columbus, Ohio. The busing system in this city is called COTA (Central Ohio Transit Authority, but this man has the potential to transport this city Nationwide.
This is my first KOTA show but I’ve known his name for years now. He was one of the best networkers I ran into in my twenties. A complete neglect of the opinion of people who weren't supporting his movement, I still admire his resolve. And so I find myself watching as he effortlessly mingles with other artists and introduces himself to new supporters. Gracefully rocking out a stage to a small attentive audience after technical difficulties delayed his set. I was all smiles throughout the entire show..- eyes bouncing from artist to audience in attempt to gauge reactions. I have a few friends who call themselves rappers and I've went to their shows. KOTA SODA carries himself like a movement embodied. His supporters all smiles like his enchanting music breeds cult members! I left ACE of CUPS in a toga while holding a cup of Kool-Aid.
If you're looking for a new artist, here's your guy. If you're an elitist like me and looking for an underground artist with tremendous work effort and huge potential? KOTA SODA.
in an era of AI ghostwriting, you can tell Kota's material comes from his own lived experience. He's a being living in reflection attempting to share those experiences with others, & his shit bumps. That YouTube video? The chorus of that song pays no rent in my cerebral. I felt like a real fan when he finally played it in his set. CAMERA: ON! BECAUSE THEY DON'T KNOW PAIN, AND THEY DONT KNOW GROWTH!
